India’s Hydropower Sector: Current Landscape and Opportunities

  • Installed Capacity: As of June 2024, India’s hydropower sector has an installed capacity of 46,928 MW, accounting for 10.6% of the country’s total power generation capacity. It plays a vital role in ensuring reliable and flexible electricity supply.
  • Untapped Potential: Despite a total estimated hydropower potential of 145,320 MW, only around 32% has been harnessed, indicating substantial scope for future development.
  • Sluggish Growth: Capacity additions have slowed in recent years, with just 1,229 MW added over the past five years and only 78 MW commissioned during 2023–24.
  • Small Hydro Power (SHP): India’s SHP potential is 19,749 MW, but less than 20% has been utilized due to factors such as remote project locations and high transmission costs. As of June 2024, the installed SHP capacity stands at 5,005.25 MW.
  • SHP Generation Trends: SHP generation declined by 15% in 2023–24, totaling 9,485.04 MUs. However, there was a modest recovery in 2024–25 (up to June), with generation increasing by 2.68% to 2,104 MUs, compared to the same period last year.
  • Hydropower Generation Update: In 2024–25 (up to June), total hydropower generation rose marginally by 1.03% to 34,878 MUs. However, decreasing reservoir levels are raising concerns about reduced output during the summer months, increasing dependence on coal and other non-renewable sources. This emphasizes the importance of effective water resource management and a diversified energy mix.
  • Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs): PSPs are becoming critical for integrating renewable energy sources into the grid. They offer essential energy storage and grid balancing services to ensure stability in the supply of clean energy.
  • Operational PSP Capacity: India currently has 4,745.6 MW of pumped storage capacity in operation, distributed across key states:
    • Telangana – Nagarjuna Sagar PSP, Srisailam LBPH PSP
    • Maharashtra – Bhira PSP, Ghatgar PSP
    • Tamil Nadu – Kadamparai PSP
    • West Bengal – Purulia PSP
    • Gujarat – Kadana PSP, Sardar Sarovar PSP
  • Future Developments: An additional 61,060 MW of PSP capacity is under various stages of planning, investigation, and construction, pointing to a promising future for energy storage infrastructure in India.
